A Petition to Include Taiwan as an Observer in the World Health Assembly

Dear WHA Committees,

We are a group of Taiwanese people who are concerned about global hygiene issues and our own rights. We are writing to you in regards to our concern over the following incident.

Recently, we have learned that for certain reasons which may not necessarily be related to hygiene problem, Taiwan was not invited as one of the observers in the World Health Assembly.
We are deeply troubled. As one of the most medically advanced countries, Taiwan has also been dedicating to the hygiene academic community, cooperating with the global hygiene policies, sharing our medical resources and latest knowledge with the global community. Our longtime dedication has benefited many countries and millions of people worldwide. In other words, Taiwan has been playing a significant role in global hygiene. One of the most known cases is that we successfully contained the spreading of SARS in 2003.

We believe that health care is for all humankind, it is universal. It is beyond the scope of races, religions, politics, and economics. We also believe that our experience in medical and hygiene development is valuable to the global community. WHA needs Taiwan, and Taiwan needs WHA to further contribute to global health. If Taiwan cannot attend WHA as an observer this year, it would create a weak link in the global alliance of hygiene.

Therefore, we would like to express through this letter, our wish for you to reconsider inviting Taiwan as one of the 2019 WHA observers as Taiwan’s hygiene experience is essential to the global community.

Thanks for reading.

Best,

WHO Needs Taiwan for Wholeness and Health Overlap

Dear WHA Committees, Recently, we have learned that for certain reasons which may not necessarily be related to hygiene problem, Taiwan was not invited as one of the observers in the World Health Assembly.Such situation is really incomprehensible because: Excluding 23.5 millions of people living in Taiwan is against the main principles of WHO, namely “Health for All” and the “Right to Health”.

While those communicable diseases such as Ebola, avian flu, Zika and many others do not respect borders, not including Taiwan in the discussions and mechanisms to fight such virus represents a global health risk for everybody.

As the 21st economic power in the world as well as a country recognized for the quality and the access levels of its health system, Taiwan is capable of sharing its experience and expertise to actively support WHO and its member States to achieve health‐related UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) We are deeply troubled.
