We are LaiPhauTe, a group of Taiwanese youths who love and care about our country,Taiwan. We recognize ourselves as a member of the global citizens, and we are concerned about global health issues.
2019 World Health Assembly(WHA) will take place in Geneva, Switzerland from 21 May to 28 May. However, Taiwan has not received WHO’s invitation so far, and it is because of a lack of cross-strait understanding between Taiwan and China, implied by WHO Spokesperson Christian Lindmeier. In response, Taiwan Ministry of Health and Welfare has joined “Walk the Talk” activity to express themselves and to draw international support.
The event will possibly cause damage to global health care development and medical practices, for Taiwan has played a significant role in global health. This is also a political event that has violated Taiwanese people’s right.
According to The Constitution of World Health Organization, “The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being regardless of their race, religion, political belief, economic or social condition.” We strongly believe, from an epidemic prevention point of view, politics should never violate health as human rights.
As a country which has always boycotted by China, there is not much we can do, however, as a global citizen, we have to claim our rights to the world. As human beings, we believe that it is our right and responsibility to fight for justice.
So, let us put our will into words, through letters, through emails, to WHO. Let WHO know that the world needs Taiwan because Taiwan is one of the most medically advanced countries in the world. One person, one letter, let us send this message to WHO.
Send a letter or an email to WHO headquarters, expressing that you hope WHA can invite Taiwan as an observer this year, or simply expressing your support for Taiwan.
Write down your hope on a postcard or a piece of writing paper, and express that you hope WHA could include Taiwan. Sign your name at the end of the letter, and send it to WHO headquarters.
